INTRODUCTION TO THE POTTER’S WHEEL:  Cups and Mugs

This class will cover the basics of throwing cylinders and making good functional handles.  You can expect to create a variety of styles of cups and mugs (e.g. teacup, beer stein, cafe au lait mug) and fire them in our stoneware kiln.

Sunday, 7:00 - 9:30 PM (May 9 – May 30) • Gillies

Thursday, 7:00 – 9:30 PM (May 13 – June 3) • Staff

Tuesday, 7:00 – 9:30 PM, (May 11 – June 1) • Bradley

INTERMEDIATE WHEEL:  Teapots

Rob will help students tackle this iconic potters form with clear instructions on how to create and assemble the components. Students will consider function, balance, and aesthetics when addressing lids, spout design, and handle placement. The final class will include a tea tasting party to test out the new pots. Students should be comfortable centering and pulling a cylinder.

INTERMEDIATE WHEEL:  “Stealing from the Masters”

Painting students often copy works in museums to gain insight from the “Great Masters.” Carter will share examples from his pottery collection for his students to copy as faithfully as possible. In the process, students can internalize the technical skills and stylistic choices of the makers and incorporate those ideas into their own original work.

Monday, 7:00 – 9:30 PM, (May 10– May 31) • Gillies

MAJOLICA TILE MAKING TECHNIQUES

Instructor Caryn van Wagtendonk will focus on techniques for using majolica (tin glaze) with colorful stains and washes to create a rich, painterly surface. We will discuss the many traditions which use this type of glaze surface around the globe. Our work will be done on terra cotta tiles with the potential for students to make small murals along the way. Don't worry about your drawing and painting skills- image transfer tricks included.

2010 MAYMESTER YOUTH CLASSES

GOOD DIRT on the GO!

Good Dirt has worked with the after school program coordinators at several Clarke County Schools, including Barrow, Timothy, and Barnett Shoals to establish creative clay workshops for their participants.  If you would like for us to set up an after school clay program at your school, please call Rob to discuss the details at 706-355-3161.

YOUTH WHEEL

Kids should have a packed lunch, snack, and water bottle, and should dress for lots of messy fun. Weather permitting, lunch will be a picnic at Lay Park (a short walk from the studio) to allow kids to refresh their creative juices with some physical activity. Spring Break camp will include projects geared to the season…flower pots, vases, birdhouses, etc.

2010 SPRING FUSED GLASS WORKSHOPS

Glass Fusing Workshops with Kim Sutherland

In each of her winter glass fusing workshops, Kim Sutherland will introduce the techniques and concepts necessary to complete the designated project and to gain an understanding of how the glass will behave when heated in the kiln.  Although the projects are somewhat progressive in degree of difficulty, students should feel free to take any of the workshops without having started the series at the beginning.   All spring glass fusing workshops are scheduled at the same time as ‘Family Try Clay’.  Your kids can play in the clay while you enjoy some creative time of your own in the glass studio!  Space is limited and materials must be purchased in advance, so please register at least a week before the workshop date.

3-D COPPER  CONNECTIONS and FUSED GLASS

Tuition:  $20 + Materials: $30 = $50 includes firing

Enter 3-D with copper wire connections.  By embedding the ends of a copper wire in adjoining stacks of glass, the pieces can be bent and articulated after fusing.  Possible creations include butterflies, flowers, and simple animal figures.  This is a great class to learn the basics and let your imagination run wild with design ideas.

Sunday, 2:00 – 4:00 PM, (April 11) • Kim Sutherland

FUSED and SLUMPED GLASS SUSHI PLATE

Tuition: $30 + Materials: $30 = $60 includes firing

Fused and slumped glass sushi plate.  Students will create a two-layer rectangular glass sandwich with lots of design possibilities.  The blank will be fused into a solid piece with nicely rounded edges.  In a second firing, we will slump the blank into a shallow rectangular mold to make a small plate perfect for sushi, tapas, or desserts.

Sunday, 2:00 – 4:00 PM, (April 25)) • Kim Sutherland
