INTERMEDIATE
WHEEL: “Better Bottoms”
Have you ever noticed how
pottery aficionados immediately turn over a pot and inspect its foot? Carter Gillies
will demonstrate how you can make a statement with the bottoms of your
pots. From simple embellishments
like wiring off with a textured wire to more complex applied feet, Carter
will help you consider the whole form, including its humble underside. Lots of attention will be paid to the
techniques and subtle range of possibilities for trimmed feet. This is a great class for those who have
the basic skills but want to take their pots beyond ho-hum.
Monday 7:00 – 9:30PM, (September 13 –
November 1) • Gillies

INTERMEDIATE
WHEEL: “Throwing Bigger”
Throwing bigger pots is not so
much a matter of strength as it is of clever technique. Rob will show you good fundamental techniques
to throw tall cylinders and big bowls without anyone pulling any
muscles. Then we will learn all
kinds of tricks to make the pots even bigger by ballooning forms, stacking
cylinders, and adding coils. As with
any exercise, the challenge of making pots at a larger scale will make
routine throwing much more confident and carefree. Students should feel comfortable
centering clay and pulling modest cylinders.

RELIEF
TILE
Caryn will
demonstrate techniques to create both low and high relief tiles, as well as
relief panels that span multiple tiles.
Earthenware relief tiles will be embellished with slips, stains and
glazes. Students may choose to work
in stoneware for outdoor tile applications.
Caryn will teach students how to create
successful relief tile press molds using a clay model and pottery
plaster. Students can expect to
create many samples while learning techniques, and Caryn
will guide them in creating a larger mural or panel. Installation and grouting will be
covered.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
Rob Sutherland will work with
students individually to help them complete projects of their own
design. This class encourages lots
of interaction between the students, as projects suggested by one student
often inspire others in the class.
Topics are wide ranging, and Rob will make suggestions and
demonstrate techniques when class members need new ideas to explore.

Glass
Fusing Workshops with Kim Sutherland
In each of her winter glass fusing
workshops, Kim Sutherland will introduce the techniques and concepts necessary
to complete the designated project and to gain an understanding of how the
glass will behave when heated in the kiln.
Although the projects are somewhat progressive in degree of
difficulty, students should feel free to take any of the workshops without
having started the series at the beginning.
All spring glass fusing
workshops are scheduled at the same time as ‘Family Try
Clay’. Your kids can play in
the clay while you enjoy some creative time of your own in the glass
studio! Space is limited and
materials must be purchased in advance, so please register at least a week
before the workshop date.
