2008 SPRING ADULT CLASSES

 

Classes will meet once a week for eight weeks.  The materials fee for ceramic classes covers 25 lbs. of clay and all of the associated firing costs.  Adult classes come with unlimited open studio time.

 

CLAY ON AND OFF THE WHEEL

Tuition:  $155 + Materials:  $40 = $195

This class is a wide-ranging introduction to both handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques.  It provides an excellent background for other courses at Good Dirt.  Students can expect to create functional stoneware pottery of their own design and to participate in an exciting outdoor Raku firing.  Mature high school students are welcome to enroll.

BEGINNING WHEEL

Tuition:  $155 + Materials:  $40 = $195

This class will lead students through the fundamentals of wheel throwing with a series of group projects and individual tutorials. Surface decoration techniques using slips and glazes will also be covered. Student work will be fired in our Cone 10 reduction and outdoor Raku kilns.

INTERMEDIATE WHEEL:  "Intensive Functional Stoneware"

Tuition:  $155 + Materials:  $40 = $195

 “Drill Sergeant” Carter Gillies will guide students through a series of individual and group tutorials designed to expand on basic skills.  Drills will be designed to eliminate bad habits and increase confidence in handling clay straight from the wheel.  Carter will thoroughly address the functional and aesthetic considerations of handles, lidded containers, and pouring vessels.

Intermediate Wheel:  Throwing Bigger

Tuition:  $155 + Materials:  $40 = $195

Whether your goal is to learn to throw whole bags of clay with ease or to pull taller cylinders for making big mugs and pitchers, this is the class for you.  Rob will introduce numerous techniques to help you work more efficiently at the wheel.  You’ll learn tricks like sectional throwing, centering in parts, coil throwing and more to make bigger pots a matter of patience and precision, rather than brute force.

SPECIAL PROJECTS IN CLAY

Tuition:  $155 + Materials:  $40 = $195

If you have projects in mind and just want a little technical guidance and advice, this is the class for you.  Rob will work individually with students to help them realize their creative goals.  Projects suggested by one student often become fertile ground for exploration for the rest of the class.  This class may be repeated.

Handbuilt Porcelain:  “From Candlesticks to Vases”

Tuition:  $155 + Materials:  $50 = $205

Instructor Annette Gates will share her methods for slab, coil, and press-molded construction with a focus on decorative pieces like vases and candlesticks.  In addition to construction and finishing techniques, Annette will introduce a number of possibilities for surface embellishment including stains, embedded glass and semi-precious stones, slips and glazes.

Tuesday, 7:00 - 9:30 PM (March 18 – May 6) · Gates

 

HANDBUILDING:  “Sculptural Forms

Tuition:  $155 + Materials:  $50 = $205

This class will introduce basic handbuilding skills for beginners, and advanced techniques for those who want to try bigger and more challenging forms. Possible projects can range from book ends and lamp bases to bird baths, outdoor totem lanterns and more. We will discuss making strong connections, using supports for drying, and building in sections.

Wednesday, 7:00 - 9:30 PM (March 19 – May 7) · Van Wagtendonk

 

INDEPENDENT STUDIO

Tuition:  $126 for a minimum two month period ($63 each additional month)

Materials:  $40 = Total:  $166

Any additional clay must be purchased for $30 per bag – use of glazes and firing fees are calculated in this price.

Individuals who have taken at least one class at Good Dirt or who have comparable experience may work in the studio independently. 

Registration is by permission.

 

 

2008 SPRING YOUTH CLASS

 

YOUTH WHEEL

Ages 8 and up

Tuition:  $120 + Materials:  $40 = $160

This class will cover the basics of using the potter’s wheel and will challenge students to be creative with their pieces.  We will cut, stack, and reassemble forms, apply textures, and use a range of colored slips and glazes to make each creation original and exciting.  This class will culminate in a hands-on Raku firing for some surprising iridescent and crackled results.   (8 weeks)

Monday, 4:15 – 6:15 PM (March 17 - May 5) • Staff

 

BIG KIDS AND LITTLE KIDS CLAY PLAY:  “A Parent/Child Workshop:
Ages 3-5*

Tuition for pair:  $60 + Materials:  $20 = $80

Parents and kids can get dirty together pounding pulling pinching and rolling both collaborative and individual projects such as ice cream bowls, bird baths and finger puppets. This class may be repeated, as projects will vary.   (6 weeks)
 *4-5 yr olds enrolled in school may take this class without a parent.

Saturday: 10:00 - 11:00 AM, (March 29 - May 3)Staff

 

 

DIRTY FINGERS

Ages 5-10

Tuition:  $68, + Materials:  $20 = $88

This class will cover the ins and outs of hand building.  Students will make a variety of pots and sculpture and even get to experience the thrill of an outdoor Raku firing.  This class may be repeated.   (6 weeks)

TRY CLAY

 

WEEKLY TRY CLAY - ALL AGES

Tuition:  $20 each participant

Did you ever just want to try making something out of clay? Well, today is the day to do it. Instruction will cover a variety of techniques. Students will work with terra cotta clay and paint their creations with colored clay slips. All work will be glazed with a shiny, food safe glaze. Please call to register for the session of your choice.

EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT, 7:00 - 9:00 PM

 

FAMILY TRY CLAY

Tuition:  $20 each participant*

*SPECIAL FAMILY OFFER:  after first two family members, additional family members can participate for $10/person.

 

This is a perfect opportunity to introduce your child to the creative possibilities of clay.  An instructor will work with you to create hand-built projects of your choice. Possibilities include ceramic piggy banks, special dishes, sculptures, and more. All work will be glazed and fired in our electric kilns.  Please call to register for the session of your choice. 

EVERY SUNDAY AFTERNOON, 2:00 - 4:00 PM

 

 

REGISTRATION:  Class sizes are small and registration is limited, so please register early by calling 706.355.3161. Please be advised that space will not be reserved until the tuition and materials fees are paid in full. We accept cash, check, MasterCard and Visa.
 
CANCELLATIONS:  We will make every effort to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment one week prior to the first class, but it may be as late as 24 hours beforehand. If for some reason the student must cancel, refunds will be granted up to one week prior to the start of the class minus a $35 cancellation fee. No refunds can be made once the class has begun.

We offer unpaid internship, scholarship, and work study programs. Call for more information.
