@ Good Dirt

Dear Friends of Good Dirt,

Just a quick note to let you know that summer adult classes start next week.  Carter Gillies will be offering two intermediate wheel classes, one on pots for plants and flower arranging, and the other on beverage service sets.  Caryn van Wagtendonk’s Special Projects class is perfect for those wanting to pursue their own ideas in sculpture, tile, or relief.  Beginning classes both on and off the wheel are offered on several nights of the week, so it’s easy to build a little fun and relaxation into your schedule.  Check out the times at Summer Classes.  If you’d like to register for any of these classes, please call right away at 706-355-3161 to make sure your first choice is available.

If your 4-6 year old needs a creative outlet this summer, we do have a few spaces left in the weeks of camp starting in June and August.  July camps for this age group are fully booked.  For the older age groups (7-10 and 11+) we have at least some availability for all remaining weeks.  You may still register by mailing in the form from our website, but feel free to call to check on the availability of your preferred camps.  It’s really great to see the studio’s shelves populated with dragons and dinosaurs, fancy flying machines, and all the other creative projects the kids are working on.  I hope your kids can join in the fun.

The Gallery @ Good Dirt will remain open 7 days/week throughout the summer, so stop by for some manly mugs for Father’s Day, one-of-a-kind wedding gifts, or just an inspirational visit.  I’m always glad to tell you how a pot was made and fired, and many of the artists represented in the Gallery have studios or teach classes right here at Good Dirt.  How’s that for local?  A customer related to me just this morning that she had visited several ceramics galleries in Asheville, N.C.

and concluded that none of it compared in quality or value to our gallery.  Just one person’s opinion, of course, but it made my day!

I’ve just returned from two weeks visiting potters and basket makers in England and France.  I’m looking forward to letting all the inspiration I received take root in my work.  I can’t wait to incorporate some willow basketry techniques into my pots, to work with more local materials, and to take more chances with the pieces I create.  I also hope some of the relationships I’ve made with potters overseas will eventually lead to some international visiting artist workshops here at the studio.  The trip has renewed my wonder at the dedication and passion of craftspeople the world over.  My first class at Good Dirt ignited that passion for clay in me.  I encourage you to give it a try either as part of an eight week class or through Friday night ‘Try Clay’.  Who knows where it might lead?  Have a great summer.

Sincerely Yours,

Rob Sutherland
